經濟風暴中亞洲的功能食品市場機會潛力仍大

這一波經濟風暴太大了, 雖然10幾年來見識過不少次的經濟風暴, 但都沒有這一回來的兇猛 , 以前都是地區性的, 短期性的, 偶發性的, 這一回是全球性特別是美國都倒下去的情況, 必須非常小心以待, 以前碰過健保風暴, 97年的亞洲金融風暴, 2001 年的網路泡沫與美國崩盤, 2003 年的SARS `...... 都沒有這一回來得嚴重
不過到底有多嚴重, 目前我們還看不到底, 電子業已經趴下去了, 保健營養業到底會受到什麼影響?
1990年代以來, 日本發生非常嚴重的經濟風暴, 各行各業都成長緩慢甚至於是負成長, 不過, 過去 18年來, 日本市場的保健業, 仍然以非常快速的成長, 甚至一度是 好幾年都 2 位數成長. 這歷史現象顯示, 先進國家受到經濟風暴, 民眾花在自我保健的費用其實並不會縮減, 不過, 在台灣到底如何, 因為缺乏數據, 我目前不敢定論. 經驗上, 过去每回遇到經濟風暴, 很多體質不佳的公司會倒閉, 大家信心都會變得很低落, 不過, 這剛好也是產業重新洗牌的時間, 在不景氣的年代, 剛好是許多長青企業進行品牌投資和產品重整的機會點
對岸的中國大陸, 雖然相對受到經濟風暴的傷害較小, 但別忘了先前還沒有發生風暴時對岸也剛好是調整經濟政策, 由外銷轉內銷的重大轉變, 沿海許多的外銷為主的企業受到人民弊升值, 去年的勞動法, 退稅與稅制調整... 等一連串的 調整, 剛好碰上了這回的全球風暴, 對內地市場的影響不可不大, 雖然挾帶著全球最高最快速成長的 近三億新興中產階級社會興起的機會, 保健業應該有很好的成長機會, 不過, 自 2004年以來到現在, 中國的食品與藥品行業出現狀況不斷, 行政與管理系統一直不穩定, 相對整體市場的信心因為政策搖擺不定, 一直沒有非常突破的成長, 可說是行業的暗淡期, 加上最近毒奶事件, 可說是已經對於中國的官僚系統之管理制度與能力又加上一個重擊, 一方面可說也是個機會, 如果能夠由SFDA 的改革上面開始, 進行中國大規模的食品與藥品行業的改革, 搭接上全球數量最龐大的消費者族群與最具潛力的市場, 應該 是可以見到這行業的春天, 目前我個人認為影響市場最大的因素不是 消費者受到經濟風暴的問題, 而是信心與市場管理機制未明導致企業投入信心不足的問題

, 個人覺得有趣的是, 保健市場的興旺, 其實與經濟風暴沒有很大的關連, 這是過去歷史的法則, 因為個人在投資自己健康的方面並非屬於衝動消費, 是屬於相對 理性的消費行為, 在經濟受到影響的情況下, 被砍掉的家庭預算通常會是在衝動與非必要消費, 比方消費電子等, 但保健支出不會受到這樣的影響
在保健消費方面, 整體成長受到主要的因素自人口結構, 國家藥政管理制度這兩個宏觀的影響很大, 中國與日本對於保健的市場管理機制都相對比較嚴格, 但人口結構上, 日本是老人社會, 中國則是相對較年輕的人口結構, 中產階級高速成長, 因此, 雖然市人口結構不同, 對於需求產品有所區隔, 但宏觀上面, 挾龐大的人口數量, 中國與日本的保健市場仍是亞洲最龐大且具潛力的. 以日本來說, 銀髮族消費將占有高的比例, 中國則以青年女性的保健消費為主, 美容 與基本日常營養方面市場需求將更擴大

Nutraceutical Opportunities in China, Japan

LONDON—Japan is known for its innovation in the functional food and beverage field, while China offers the world’s largest economic potential. With slowing economic growth in Western nations, attention is turning to Asia to develop markets for nutraceutical and functional food products. A new report from Business Insights, available through Research & Markets, explores the current regulations, consumer behavior and market trends in China and Japan.
Among the good news:
The Asian functional food and beverage market and is set to increase at a CAGR of 5.6 percent from $36.6 billion in 2007 to $48 billion by 2012. Japan and China are leaders in category, with growth for each country set to continue at a CAGR of 5.3 percent and 5.9 percent respectively.
Between 2005 and 2008, beauty foods increased from a share of 2.3 percent of all functional products launched in 2005 in China, to 5.2 percent in 2008. The beauty segment as it relates to functional ingredients and foods is an extension of the Japanese model of using innovative ingredient combinations.
In 2007 the total food and drinks market in China and Japan was $209.9 billion and $253.5 billion, respectively. By 2011, China is expected to grow to $292.7 billion in food and beverage sales, making it by far the largest market in Asia.
In China, there are 27 categories of product-specific health claims defined as either nutrient function claims or reduction of disease claims. According to the State Food and Drugs Administration (SFDA), only 27 to 33 percent of all products submitted between 2003 and 2005 were authorized, with only 30 percent of those approved making it onto the market.
Additional topics addressed include the use of labels and logos in the Japanese market, the Chinese regulatory system, food safety issues and demographic trends.

French supplier NB Consulting has developed a new fruit and vegetable-derived ingredients that tap into fierce trends in the nutraceuticals market: Sinetrol, a fat burner derived from citrus , grapefruit and guarana extract .

Sinetrol is a patented synergistic extract made from red orange, orange, grapefruit and guarana extract with total fruit biophenols of 60-80 per cent, flavanones 10-20 per cent HPLC, and caffeine 1-4 per cent.
Human adipocytes from 35-years-old women were collected and treated on the same day with either Sinetrol, a placebo, or 12 percent guarana.
The Sinetrol was seen to increase lipolysis (release of free fatty acid) by 600 per cent more than the placebo, and 200 per cent more than the guarana alone. The effect is attributed to the ingredient inhibiting cathecol-methyl transferase and phosphodiestrerase.
In southern European countries such as France, Spain and Italy, fat burners and weight maintenance products take up a good deal of space on pharmacy shelves.
